Never tried salt, but I remember my Mum telling me that when she and my Scottish father lived in Scotland , everyone seemed to put salt on it!

Thanks everyone. Yes, it was about the spelling. Can't remember how it cropped up, but dad asked me over the weekened what I thought the correct spelling of porridge was. He was saying it was spelt "porage" on the Scotts Oats box in the kitchen, and that he'd always thought it was spelt porridge. I assured him the spelling was indeed porridge, and had to go and look at the box in the kitchen to check he wasn't talking nonsense. I found it did indeed say porage!!

That seems to be their very own unique way of spelling it which has not caught on, because I checked several dictionaries and not one has "porage" even as an alternative spelling.

What amazes me is that I had never in all my life noticed the Scotts spelling before, even though I have often bought and used their product.

Amazed to hear they're owned by Quaker!

Mum used to work at Quaker too, in Southall. She worked everywhere!

My mum was born and brought up in Coatbridge (village outside Glasgow) so she often cooked porridge for us in the winter before we went to school.

She would cook it with salt in it because that's the way Scotts like it but she would encourage us to put sugar in ours (probably to make us eat it)

What a mixture that was - hot porridge (made with water), salt and sugar.

These days I still eat it but make it in the microwave with milk and then put a tiny bit of sugar in it because I try not to eat too much sugar and can't bear it without. I definitely don't put salt in it
