At work we are deeply involved with the upcoming 'smart meter' project.

The idea is that by 2020 everyone will have Gas/Electric/Water all on a smart meter. This will allow 'them' to monitor your exact usage and you will be given a carbon footprint rating - and be charged on it.

Sweden have apparently got this same exercise already on the go and in 10 years of implementation have still not finished the project. Far from it from what I've been told.

The UK has 3 times the requirement and we haven't started yet so 2020 is considered pie in the sky but 'they' are still going down this timescale.

(When I say 'we', not me, but another team so I only have very high level detail)

The company I am with for my gas and electric use smart meters but I don't have one so they just get me to email my readings to them every month. I'm happy to do that because at least they get regular accurate readings unlike Southern Electric who used to visit us once every six months to read the meter.

I really don't want a water meter though ..........

From what I'm being told at work we are all supposed to be 'connected' by 2020.

(bear in mind that this is via inter-team office chit chat). This is from the smart meter project project manager though = watch this space

You should aim to pay a similar amount to what you paid a year ago.

I don't agree. As the meter was a dud neither party has any way of measuring or proving actual usage. In addition, the electric company, which is responsible for the meter, was trying to charge you money you didn't actually owe them, so they should forfeit whatever they were legitimaely owed anyway to make amends.

The woman that was dealing with my problem asked me to email her three weekly readings and then another one in a month's time just to check our usage and she seemed fairly confident that she had got the charges right.

I was quite happy with the way she dealt with it too.
