Boris wants to build a £912million (multiply that x at least 3 for the actual costs) for a cycle motorway between Long lane Hillingdon to Barking. Traffic on the A40 will lose a lane, as will other main routes like the Embankment. It appears that the Hillingdon end of the cycle track will be built on green belt land between Charville Lane and the A40 (although Boris's maps are - like him - a bit vague :)

Whilst I agree that investing in infrastructure is the way to go to drive the economy, I wonder how far £1billion would go to improving bus stops and making buses a far more inviting option for ALL (including the more disadvantaged in society) rather than a white elephant cycle route through white city.

Or perhaps this cash could reduce the exhaust emissions of buses and black cabs to make air quality better for ALL

(I am a cyclist, but I do not think this plan benefits anywhere near enough Londoners to justify the costs)

Many years ago I used to cycle to work from Hanwell to NW10 and that was far enough. I can't imagine people cycling from Hillingdon to Barking that is mad although there might be takeup for the shorter routes, say to Hanwell, Ealing or Acton. Other considerations are of course the traffic fumes which are much worse than they were and the inclement weather. Trust me it is no fun cycling in the rain and wet.

What would would be the point in investing in the bus service before they sort out the feral youths who vandalise them and intimidate other people using them. Most of the buses plying the local area are in a terrible state with the windows all scratched and graffiti all over them.

We have miles of cycle tracks and our air quality has really improved.
Love these little Lycra vacuum cleaners sucking up all the nasty petrol fumes.

The point is that the result of 1 £billion would be available to everyone, not just to a small minority of the population. There are very many people - some are some of he most vulnerable in the community - who are forced to use buses. I would imagine, £1b would go a long way in improving & installing more bus shelters with benches and bus indicators signs. Perhaps even a few more buses, drivers and even routes. Perhaps priority traffic lights for buses and bus lane improvements. And for your feral youth problem Geezer, perhaps AK 47s could be mounted next to the ticket machines and operated by the driver :)

The vast majority of cyclists are young and obviously fit. It seems to me that looking after the more vulnerable people in society - whilst also making the improved bus network for all Londoners - it's a much fairer way to go

Boris is beyond the joke I take him for, a typical Tory who measure wealth, not by what they have, rather on what they owe, but then its the same with most of the Politico's, the whole system is corrupt, too much worry about what the other guy has got, lets face it we are not in union with Europe, we are in competition, and lacking leadership, adrift in a sea of uncertainty without a rudder, awash with casualties, from all the failed Countries who are going under, so who saves us? :? :shock:

My point is to invest in new systems without first sorting out the inherent problems of the previous one is not the answer. It is simply throwing good money after bad.
Vandalism in only a part of this problem but a significant one.
