My mum worked at Chibnalls.

I did a day's agency work at Chibnalls which involved washing & shunting the lorries around when the returned from their rounds. It was awful. It was freezing cold which meant the truck washer was frozen, so me (and 2 others) tried using a bucket and brush until the ground froze.

The two others didn't speak English and we had to wait for trucks in a sort of tiny 1 man car park boot, fitted with a 3KW heater and no seats. It was hot in there & -2C outside. Afte a couple of hours of silence with these guys, I ventured into the rather grubby canteen for a cuppa to find all the workers were in an Asian language and none appeared to speak English. Even tannoy announcements were in another tongue as were newspapers and magazines which were laying about.

I worked until 12 and went home as I couldn't stand another 5 hours of extreme heat then freezing cold and silence!!!

Wasn't there a Mothers Pride bakery on the site on the Uxbridge Road in Southall where McDonalds now stands.....

You know the place... On the other corner was that car spares shop that seemed to have the parts no one else did......

I did a van boys job at Greenford for a few weeks one early spring/summer when we lived in Hanwell.
I can remember it and it would have been 72/73 as we rushed around one Sat morning so we could get back and watch the cup final on our brand new colour TV.

The van driver used to live across the road from me in Dryden Avenue.

Premier Foods, the maker of Hovis, is cutting 900 jobs at its bread division and is closing two bakeries.

The company said it would close two bakery sites in Greenford, west London and Birmingham some time next year.

That bakery has been there for as long as I can remember.. Although Jim can probably remember it being built in the 1890's...... 8-)
.

The bakers has been there as long as I remember (I grew up a few roads away) but my Dad moved to Greenford when that area was still fields when the first houses were being built in the early 1930s so not the 1890s I'm afraid ;)
