I used that Cee-Jay place near the White Hart once, some years ago.

Very keen pricing at the time.

I stopped shopping at Comet years ago. Their customer service was non existent as it consisted of a swarm of cocky commission led salesmen rushing you as you walked in. If you took too long to buy, they get the hump. If you wanted a £9.99 kettle, they'd treat you like shite and if you asked them a technical question they'd just read the label on the appliance.

I have used Euronics (proper sales staff from an independent shop with a franchised image) or - as Jim says, John Lewis. Quite often you get a 2 year warranty from JL and staff who have been trained, polite and speak English as their first language,

I notice Dixons shares rallied today. I reckon if I had any, I would probably sell them now as the only way is down with electrical retail now the www is king

Shops are to Analogue as Internet shopping is to Digital. ;)

With Comet, if you buy a telly and it goes wrong and Comet has finally folded, who is the guarantee with ?

Guarantee is void so effectively you no longer have one. Which it is why once a firm announces it is in trouble it is best avoided.

As soon as they went into administration (another firm taking over) all old contracts and commitments are annulled. Theoretically you still have a contracted arrangement with the previous firm but as they have no money or resources to repair your equipment it is not worth the paper it is written on.

When I lived there in the UK, I used to get extended appliance insurance with 'White Knight Insurance'. Thay were a better deal, then the what the stores used to offer.
In a case like buying from Comet, it might be worth looking into.

Sale of goods act would still apply. So if the firm/shop was still trading and an item broke down soon after purchase then they would be obliged to replace it or refund.

Problems come 6 months down the line and with extended warranties. 6 Months for example if the store was still trading then they may try and negotiate down any refund..

Under case law big ticket items such as tv's >£400 are not strictly limited to the one years manufacturers guarantee. There is no stipulated period but if you had bought an expensive item and it broke down after 13 or 14 Months then sale of goods would still apply although the store would deny it did. Stick to your guns and they should fold.

Of course there is a difference between a £500 tv and a £19.99 kettle in this regard
