Was going to buy a Hayes & Harlington Gazette this morning, but walking past an estate agent there was a pile of them in a basket free.

On the front it now says "70p where sold" and inside they explain that 42,000 copies are now being given away across the borough.

Shame the way so many people have stopped buying local papers. I remember in the 70s and 80s when we had SEVERAL weekly paid for local papers. I believe the Hayes & Harlington edition of the Gazette alone sold about 40,000 copies a week, and it was broadsheet. From the same stable came the Hillingdon Mirror every Tuesday. Apart from that there was also the little Hayes News in Clayton Road. And going back further there was the Middlesex Chronicle as well.

Then of course every evening there was the Evening News and Evening Standard to choose from, and Westminster Press who owned the Gazette brought out a smashing competitor called the Evening Mail, based in Slough. It was a brilliant paper with a similar look to the Hillingdon Mirror.
