Over the last couple of decades or so, the education system has definitely been dumbed. The system has also become very politically correct, and more akin to programming and indoctrination of young people than pure education.

I can vouch for that, when my daughter did A level maths, she was doing subjects that I did for O level (Calculus for example). My A level maths (pure and applied) covered stuff that she did for her maths degree.

It was the exactly same for my daughter, and she completed her maths degree 12 years ago. She too was covering ground at Uni that I had covered at secondary school. Another indicator of how bad things are, maths students attending university today frequently spend an additional corrective first year basically bringing A Level students up to some acceptable standard.

How long since your daughter complete her degree Kremmen?

Finished her "Maths with Computing Science" at Brunel last year and got a first with honours. Subsequently snapped up by a major IT company.

And she definitely doesn't get it from me

The latest technology when I left school was the abacus with three rows, and modified with three different colours. made maths easy, I could do the 12 times table, by the time I was 27. ;) ;)

Snap..It was great exercise for the mind and you had to master it quite quickly lest you get left behind in a fast moving game...

Of course these days they all use calculators.... Wonder how many a level students today know what logarithm tables are?

Do they still use them today or has the use of calculators made them completely redundant?

Mind you I did hate algebra and trigonometry.....

Logs books confined to history.

They use calculators and they have to be a set make and model to ensure they can't sneak one in with a 'notes' function.

We also used to do a Maths thing called QED, I think, where you could prove black was white and similar.

The one that amused me for O level was a question where they showed a graphic. The question went like, side a is 2", side b is 1" and the interior angle is 30°, calculate the distance between points b and c.
I used my ruler and protractor and found that the graphic had been drawn perfectly to scale so I just measured it

Thank God for that. I recall hours at college, biting my pencil down to a splinter trying to establish the electrical resistance of a single strand of copper in an electric motor coil, armed with a complicated formula, a log table and a sheet of A4. I would have murdered for a calculator!!

Makes me sweat now just thinking about it!!!

Excellent, that's the same subjects my daughter did, at the same collage too. Went to work for the organisation that controls those big noisy things that are constantly looking for another runway in the South East. I hope all goes well for your daughter in her new career.
