Just a quick 'heads up' from me this evening. Monday is showing some significant potential for thunderstorms to develop during the afternoon, most likely to the north of London.

The Met Office have now issued a warning for Monday.

I might just go on a local storm chase !!

I hadn't realised just how long it was since I last posted my thoughts on the weather, so my apologies for that. As regular readers of this topic may know I was due to make my way down to my friends in Sussex for a 2 week week stay at the end of May.

I wasn't able to make it for the first week, when it was endless blue skies and temperatures in the high 20's C ( 75-80f ) for a whole week. I was stuck in Northwood. I finally made it down there the day the heatwave broke, and have spent the last 7 days under mostly grey and gloomy skies, temperatures which wouldn't look out of place in February, and some relentless rainfall.

I've held back from making predictions for the last week or so because in the run up to the Jubilee weekend I happend to mention to folk I know that that Sunday in particular was looking like a complete washout, which in London it sadly was. The sun shone in Sussex that afternoon though, and the contrast was quite remarkable. Even so, it was chilly down on the South Coast.

The drive home this morning was under grey rain soaked skies, though thankfully the M25 behaved itself despite the appalling weather.

For the immediate future the forecast for London and the South East is pretty dire. The Met Office and a number of other weather sites have issued weather warnings as a vigorous Low Pressure system is barrelling into the UK overnight and into Friday. Strong to gale force winds and copious amounts of rainfall are on the cards for much of Southern England in the next 24 hours, and coastal areas are expected to see the worst of it. Its reasonable to say forecasts like this are quite rare at this time of year.

As we head towards the weekend there is a chance of a slight respite from this unsettled weather, and that should be on Saturday. Sunday looks like we are under attack from the Atlantic lows again, with yet more wind and rain. Beyond that, next week looks like continuing the unsettled theme, but with less in the way of rain and wind and hopefully a few more sunny spells.

I do keep a close eye on the model runs, charts and trends, and for now Im keeping my fingers crossed for a gradual improvement towards the middle of the month, lets say from around June 17th onwards.

Thanks as always for reading and posting.

Well the M25 this morning was a river in places.

As usual about 95% of cars had headlights shining whilst the remaining 5% were hoping they would be seen by stealth.

What I have noticed is that with all this recent rain for the last few months the roadside trees and bushes are doing quite well and have never looked so healthy (and overgrown).

I see the forecast is for it to ease off during the day

Oh no was planning to cycle to Badminton on Sunday, followed by a cycle ride to the Malt Shovel and Little Britain in the afternoon.

It never ceases to amaze me why some idiotic drivers are so reluctant to put their lights on in what are clearly very poor driving conditions. Do these people seriously think that in this day and age it will wear their battery down ? My car is a Volvo and as well as being the most reliable car I have ever owned, its also the safest by a country mile. There is a lot to be said for daylight running lights.

Anyway, back to the weather. The forecast does suggest conditions will ease this afternoon in London and the South East, but thats not supported by actual events. If anything the wind has picked up here in the last hour or so. The latest report from Northolt shows a temp of 14.0c, sustained winds above 20mph and gusts in excess of 40mph. Thats weather more akin to October than June.

Here's the culprit.....a big fat Low Pressure system sitting right over the UK, and it will take some time to shift:

My initial thoughts that Saturday may see signs of a temporary improvement have been scaled back for now, because this system seems reluctant to move too far anytime soon. Good luck for Sunday BG.

Wake me up when summer finally arrives please.

Has the wind died down over there yet? In MK it has dropped a fair bit, still abit breezy though and the sun is in and out.
I always remember some pretty memorable stormy conditions when I lived in Southall. Gales howling around and the planes inbound to Heathrow on runway 23. Good memories :)
