I saw 2, quite high, heading over towards Heathrow yesterday afternoon.

Funniest bit was the pigeons. They were clearly startled and were circling profusely after each one passed

Those engines sound more like a F1 car compared to a normal motor.

jeeeez they are noisy aint they,i can understand the lim pics being unpopular but having missiles and fighters to keep the population in line is a bit over the top
now if they let the spitfires and huricanes fly around all day and night.that would be allowed.....music to my ears ;)

Them Merlin engines at the time, was very comforting, the early ones with carburetors that went pop pop pop when they did a roll, with little puffs of smoke as they did so, was reassuring in the dark days, I think they must have modified them to fuel injection, as that popping stopped and the fuel did not run out of the carbs when upside down. :) ;)

Thanks go to Tilly Shilling and her orifice.
:D

One of my jobs at the museum is to give guided tours of our Lancaster and our Spitfire is open (for a price).
Visitors get to sit in it and we can answer most questions on their histories.
Miss Shilling always gets a mention and there is a pub named after her at Farnborough.
;)

The first pilot to fly a plane upside down was a very brave man. How could he know the engine wouldn't conk out? How could he now that "lift" on the wings wouldn't have worked in reverse and pushed him down?

In those days "lift," "drag" and other influences required to achieve flight weren't understood.
A classic case of "What I don't know won't hurt me"
 ;)

A good example is the bumble bee.

There's a very good video called ohmygodspitfirepass showing exactly that.

A bit of swearing but you would too!
