OK, I truly understand the anxiety, but do you really think GCHQ have enough staff and IT capability to listen to you and me chatting about football and the weather?
They have about 7,000 staff, and even if all of them were engaged in listening type jobs using sophisticated IT word recognition software, they'd more than have their work cut out over a 37hr week! Then there's the 1.9 billion text messages a month in the UK. Even with overtime, I am not sure what sort of a dent GCHQ staff would make.
I share the concerns about the UK's surveillance society, but in practical terms, I really dont think most of us have too much to worry about.
Indeed they don't need to listen or read everything they have sophisticated software which like the google bot trawls the internet space picking up key words like aircraft, bomb, overthrow, Downing Street ect and then flags them up as it just has this thread, for human eyes to evaluate.
(hello mate I hope they are not working you too hard.....)Its not so much what we need to worry about now it's what may happen in the future. An extremist power with an agenda could have information at their fingertips which could incarcerate or kill many thousands of people.
I have no idea if Germany has a census in the early mid 1930's but if they did and it asked a question about religion or ethnicity I guess most Jews didn't think they had much to worry about.
The world turns on a sixpence we must never forget that 6 Months from now perhaps even next week we may be seeing ethnic cleansing in Ukraine Yugoslav style. A few Months ago that was not even on the horizon.
