Disgusting in this day and age and it is the so called global economy which has allowed it.

Quote:
MPs like to attack Amazon and Starbucks and Google for not paying their taxes, but they’ve yet to actually create legislation compelling them to do so.

On the last break of my last day, I chat with Pete and Susan. Susan still wants a permanent job, but her ankle is still swollen.

Her pick rate has been low. We’ve been told that next week, the hours will increase by an hour a day and there will be an extra day of compulsory overtime.

It will mean getting their children up by 4.30am, and Pete is worried about finding a baby-sitter at three days’ notice.

There have always been awful jobs, with the same sort of employment practices that Amazon has. Restaurants and kebab shops have done the same sort of thing for years.

But Amazon is not a kebab shop. It’s the future; being an Amazon ‘associate’ in an Amazon ‘fulfilment centre’ is the future of work; and Amazon’s payment of minimal tax in any jurisdiction is the future of global business.

A future in which multi-national corporations wield more power than governments.

Which may be something to think about as you click ‘add to basket’.

They will be coming for your job next......

Amazon UK, according to the recent TV expose have truly shocking and draconian working practices. Plus they use aggressive tax avoidance techniques. As mentioned above you can't blame Amazon for the tax as they are well within the law on this one. Maybe the MP's will soon be able to afford to put in more hours and put this tax nonsense to bed.

Since that program I do now look elsewhere. I've been making more use of John Lewis who are just as good if not better for the products they stock.

Plus, once they have got Amazon to pay tax properly they can invest more money into hospitals where it is reported today that patients in some areas are having to wait in ambulances outside hospitals for up to 6 hours for an A&E spot.

Disgusting

I never do this I suppose I am old fashioned in as much as I only buy what I can see, the agro if a telesales goes wrong then the face has gone! you just as well talk to a tree. the time and effort is just not worth it, to save a couple of bob, and saves all the (out of stock) replies, remember the system is set up to help them, not you !

Exploitation of workers on the bottom rung is rife everywhere, I've heard shocking stories over the years from people about the way they're treated and robbed. Something's gone very very wrong in this country.

It's now got to the stage where it's cheaper to employee UK call centre workers on minimum wage than use 'offshore' staff in some developing countries.

High street veteran Sir Stuart Rose has told people complaining about immigrants coming to work in Britain to go out and find a job of their own.

The former Marks & Spencer chief executive said it was not the fault of Bulgarians or Romanians or any other nationality if they were prepared to work hard for less money than Britons would like.

These people never think about the part where not enough people can afford to shop in their stores.
I think they still believe they can simply put up the margins to cover these losses!!

The race to the bottom is now unstoppable.

Mate of mine has tried desperately to get Christmas work in Sainsburys and Matalan without success. He did Matalan last year, they picked him up and dropped him from day to day last year as it suited them and it was all minimum wage. He went to a mass interview in Harrow for Sainsburys this year and never heard from them.

Not surprised.

They want people who won't moan and haven't a clue about their rights. The time when companies respond to all applicants is gone.
This should be a time when companies respond with the reasons why they failed to allow them to improve for next time.

All down to ignorant companies and their leaders.

Only part of the story.

Unfettered immigration means there are dozens chasing even some of the lowest paid jobs.

In such a scenario firms will pick and and choose, natural selection dictates so to speak. The introduction of the minimum wage was an essential part of this policy, otherwise wages levels would have fallen dramatically as people tried to outbid each other.

Once that had taken hold the plebs (us) would have noticed what was going on and would have taken en-mass to the streets to protest. As it stands the vast majority still stand in ignorance as to how they are being played.

All this has been very carefully planned!! The UK is on the way to becoming a Banana republic.

Government ministers all back slapping over how well the economy is doing but ignorant of how the level of inflation is eroding living standards and the fact it will continue to do so for many years to come. Food bank use in the UK is staggering as people cannot even afford to feed themselves.

Globalisation is well on the way to becoming complete in the UK.
