Jobcentre staff are lets just say 'don't give a shite' they just get you to sign a bit of paper and that's it. Their computer systems where you can search for work are always broken. You arrive 10 minutes as instructed, they keep you waiting for ages then when you see them for 5 seconds what a waste. Sack them all, Sell the buildings off and save a fortune which can be passed to the genuine unemployed.

They offer no help to the unemployed, they are only there for their government pension and do f all for anyone. Sanctions are a joke, Trying to sense out of Belfast is a joke the whole system is a joke and any one who has a brain should close them down. They offer no value to society yet alone the unemployed. Boy I have to sign on later and here is what will happen as usual.

Will get there 10 minutes before my time, the computers will be broke as they always are, the Pa,s will be sitting around chatting and after half hour you will be called. You will be asked Any changes, How,s the jobsearch going, sign this here is your next appointment all of 5 seconds if that. What a waste of tax payers money

I just saw the expose on Amazon and the way it treats it's picking staff. Quite horrendous.

They can sack you for going sick, I thought that was illegal ?

Employers can sack you for simply not liking you if they want to.

The question then becomes one of, was the dismissal fair? Avenues open for arbitration courts such as the employment tribunal who will determine such things.

Employees have very, very little protection in the first two years of starting a job. Persons dismissed in such circumstances can only take cases to tribunal where it is suspected dismissal has occurred because of racial or other discriminatory reason.

Used to be one year but was put back to two when Cameron's lot got in 2010. Labour I expect will put it back down to 1 year if they get back in in 2015. And so it will see saw whomever is in government.

As an ex trade union convenor and now an employer I see nothing wrong with it being set at one year. There can be some nasty employers out there who will exploit people.. Certainly more today than there were 15-20 years ago, but just another consequence of unfettered immigration!! What value a person when you can toss them on the scrapheap and employ another (in the que) to do the same job cheaper.

Worth pointing out at this juncture, not everything the Labour party does is pants. They can actually do good things for the working people of this Country the trouble begins when they become too socialist for their own good and too liberal with taxpayers money.

Your dad didn't live with the same conditions we have today!!

Did he have to compete with Polish and or Bulgarian people for the job he held?

Automation is the name of the game today..

Good workers are no more!! Workplaces are pretty much automated. If one man doesn't want to to do it plenty others in the que for minimum wage.

None of this was by accident!!

Exactly, and you can add the word globalisation to automation. In the real world of today companies are falling over themselves in the race to the bottom in terms of wages and conditions for their employees, whilst racing to the top in terms of profits and bonuses higher up the chain.

NPower are the latest example of this. Outsourcing British jobs to India, making another 1400 UK workers redundant in the process.

There is little doubt in my mind that the unions went too far in the 70's and needed to be reigned in to an extent. However I think the pendulum has swung way too far in the opposite direction now. The recent Amazon expose was the tip of the iceberg, and this from a company who pay virtually no taxes in the UK, claiming they don't make a profit here. If it wasn't so sickening it would be laughable.

If you haven't seen that Panorama programme yet, it is worth catching up with on BBc I-Player. The amount this global corporation received in subsidies ( bribes by any other name ) just to set up in the UK is an eye-opener.

I suspect the UK taxpayer is still subsidising their operation here in the form of top-up benefits to employees being paid the bare minimum.

no it was other Brits he had to compete with as there was the general recession. so before that took hold he answered an ad the press for ex cavalrymen to apply for duty in the Royal north west police as it was then known, so off to Canada he went, my Mum who was in service to a Canadian family living in Scotland, had the chance to carry on working for them when they went back home, and took them up on their offer, the rest is history, apart from during WW2, a few of their friends had joined up in the Canadian army, and were posted over here, then found their way to our house in Shakespeare ave, 8-) ;)

I feel guilty in this thread as I'm on the verge of retiring early due to recent circumstances and giving my job away. I certainly won't miss the daily commute between Yeading and Woking taking in the By-Pass, M4 past Heathrow and the western section of the M25. On a Thu/Fri evening rush hour that can take up to 1½ hours just to do 21 miles.

I've had my pension quotations and I can easily afford to retire. Only snag for them is that I have unique business knowledge so I'm open to part-time offers once my pension starts. Even though I've been on holiday this week I've had 3 calls for advice :)
