This is how I would have written an essay about Internet defamation when I went to Mellow Lane School... Knowing that there will be an announcement on the Leveson Inquiry findings some time this week, it should be interesting to see what the outcome will be. There is such a thing as free speech but that, sadly, can be abused by being taken too far by some, and then libel and defamation becomes rife. I have read that, according to an MP speaking about the subject, a person needs to have about £500,000 to go to court to fight a libel case. He said that his constituents would not have that kind of money and so have to suffer in silence. I would think that this statement not only applies to his constituents but to many other members of the public too. As libel and defamation can be so hurtful and damaging to people, emotionally and perhaps financially, it seems unfortunate that Legal Aid is not available, and especially so with the new era of Internet defamation which is with us now, generally. This is part of a longer essay due to be posted on my own website with other past and present essays. |
