I watched a little of the live torch relay coverage via the net as it passed through Hillingdon and onto Denham yesterday, and quite enjoyed it. But the Police escorting of the convoy seemed way over the top As the flame left Denham towards Southall (inside a speeding truck), I was intrigued to watch the many Police motorcyclists buzzing around shutting off road junctions to ensure the flame wasn't delayed. At one point, a lone Police motorcyclist rushed up the A40 slip road from Denham roundabout, and pulled across the London bound carriageway to stop all three lanes. Don't forget this is yards from the end of the M40 with speeding traffic hurtling towards the sudden closure. As the convoy (with the live web camera) came up the ramp to the A40, there was a queue of traffic being held on the main A40. Within the queue you could clearly see a Police Officer inspecting crash damaged cars where they had slammed into cars in front which had stopped for the flame. I have to ask whether suddenly stopping a near motorway standard road by using just a motorcycle, which whips up a slip road and suddenly parks at 45 degrees across the road was reasonable to keep the Olympic convoy moving? It appears that the resulting collision was minor, but what if it had been a coach, or a vehicle carrying a hazardous cargo?? The met were merely escorting a flame, a symbol of a sporting tournament. It wasn't a VIP at risk of terrorism, it wasn't a vital transplant organ for a child and it wasn't gold bullion or military ordinance which some dodgy characters would like to get there hands on. I simply cannot see the gain (of keeping the torch moving) was worth the risk of injury or death which is associate with suddenly stopping a motorway type road without using signs/cones or a rolling road block |

Its all a matter of priorities. The things you mention are for the well being of the folk they are there to protect and look after, now ask yourself what is more important? that ! or showing the world we can be trusted with this trinket |
