Mention of a Retirement Club at The Crown under another topic brought back memories of the pub.
I lived in Western View so had to pass it every day from a very early age. (even in my cowboy outfit to get the papers from Young's newsagents.)
I remember the draymen offloading barrels and lowering them by rope down a curved ladder to the cellar. the rope had a hook on the end.
Wrap the rope round the barrel and hook the bottom of the barrel.
The pong when they hosed out the cellar has probably affected my liver to this day!
I never drank there much, just nipped in now and then for a pint and a game of cards, they frowned at money on the table so we used to put it under the ashtrays.
Although it had a bit of a reputation as a rough-house I never saw many fights or domestics there and never had any problems just walking past on way home at night.
:D

What other pubs bring back memories?
