It's a fascinating photo. Dad and I have studied it for ages and we were both amazed to even see a child's bike in that era. We think the pic looks as though it may have been taken on a Sunday, most of the people look as if they may be wearing their Sunday best.

Also, we think it looks as though the shop we all knew as Hepworths may still be under construction.

What we can't fathom is what on earth the really big building is behind the shops, where dad remembers the British Restaurant being. Anyone any ideas?

My father in law was born in 1901 and I remember him saying that his mother wore skirts right down to the floor - that was everyday wear in those days.

They do look like they are smartly dressed though so you could be right about being in Sunday Best.

I notice, almost everybody is looking at the child on the bike. Would there have been children's bikes at that time?

Not sure the date of photo is correct.
The houses in Western View were built in 1915 and there is hardly any sign of Western View!
I think the big building would have been pulled down to make way for the houses in Silverdale Road which were more recent.
Much building went on in the 20's and 30's
:D

I'm still not exactly sure where the camera was, exactly.

I'm thinking outside Avis ?
