Quote:
One in ten pensioner households is worth more than £1million – the largest proportion since records began, a report reveals today.
More than one million pensioners living alone or in a couple are worth at least seven figures.
The extraordinary number highlights an elite group of older people who have benefited from the property boom and a gold-plated pension system before it was destroyed.
In comparison, many have children with no pension or savings who live at home because they cannot afford to get on the property ladder.
The report, from insurer Prudential based on figures from the Office for National Statistics, said the number of pensioner millionaires has jumped by nearly 70 per cent in six years.
During the period between 2006 and 2008 there were around 636,000 pensioner households whose total wealth was £1million or more. A pensioner household is either a couple who are both 65 or over, or a single person in that age group living on their own.
The number had jumped to 1.07million the next time the research was carried out between 2010 and 2012, according to Prudential’s analysis.

The quote below is deliberately designed to paint pensioners as the guilty members of society, when the real criminals are the politicians and their banker colleagues:
Quote:
But Angus Hanton, co-founder of the Intergenerational Foundation thinktank, said: ‘These figures show how much our young people have become the packhorse generation – paying the benefits of hundreds of thousands of millionaire pensioners.'

Nowhere in the above article is there any mention of decades of engineered currency devaluation through the joint efforts of Governments of all colours, and the BoE. The pensioners are painted as the greedy, selfish, sponging parasites on the young; while the young are declared the innocent packhorse generation who are funding the ill-gotten gains of the selfish pensioners.

The true criminals are the politicians and their bankers colleagues. But the press are not going to let the truth get in the way of what is very obvious political propaganda. Clearly, pensioners are being set up for even more of their worked-for assets to be stolen by the political class.

It's amazing. My mum and dad spent their lives managing their money prudently and buying only what they could afford while the current generation feel it's a basic human right to get sloshed regularly, smoke cannabis, have giant flat screen TVs and umpteen pay-for channels and go on holiday to Florida and Ibiza. At least, the ones I know!!

That sums up perfectly why pensioners are so offended by these press reports.

How true

My In-Laws scrimped and saved and as above only bought what they needed. He was a teacher and she worked in Woolies. They are now both approaching 90 and must be worth three quarters of a million including property. They will never get to enjoy and spend it.
It was only when my sister-in-law got power of attorney that she found the full story.

As usual these days she found a lot of it in 0.01% or zero % interest accounts and asked the banks what they were playing at not advising them properly.

In contrast my parents went on 3 expensive foreign holidays a year towards the end and blew the lot

HPI has led to a lot of this type of sentiment in the young.

They see the older generations sitting on large houses worth many many times what they paid for them and mostly they cannot afford to buy property anywhere let alone rent in an environment where rents are constantly increasing as they are tied to property value and ongoing HPI.

Put that together with the notion perpetuated by the media that the current taxpayers of today have to pay the pensions and older age benefits of today and add in the mix of ever increasing retirement ages and you can see they actually may have a valid grievance.

I am not saying either position is right or wrong simply that I understand the issues and the grievances.

Gerrymandering of the economy by parties of all colours for short term electoral gain has led us down this path.

It will not end well. Growth is what they rely upon to keep all this working and despite the £££££££Billions of QE pumped in there is very little to show for it.

Stir up hatred for the "wealthy" pensioners then introduce an assisted dying law, is it just a coincidence? Oh, but before they pop off make sure their rich estates built up on taxed oncome are taxed again at 40% for inheritance tax. And if they go into a care home make sure that they have to pay 100% of the costs at around £48k pa. In other words squeeze them hard for every last pound they have.

Do you remember politicians promising to raise the inheritance tax threshold to £1m, of clueless John Major's talk of "wealth cascading down the generations", or of introducing cap on care home contributions (still waiting)!

The In-laws did move to a tiny warden controlled retirement home some years ago so the majority of their wealth is not in the property. There are some for sale on the same complex for as little as £125k (near Worcester)
