Westonman- I am intrigued why you offer the idea that a lack of maintenance might be the cause of this flood? You're not a tabloid headline writer are you? :) If you are, I reckon you missed the big story here

I reckon suspected toff, Arthur Fitzpatrick (photo appears in the article) is a secret Boris lovechild. The resemblance is striking - as is the hair, the pose, the quote and the jeans!!!!!!

SOT, The answer to your intrigue is: Lack of proper maintenance of essential infrastructure within the UK has become a hallmark of political and corporate abuse over recent years.

Our energy supplies are under severe threat because of political under-funding, lack of sound decision making, an addiction to the myth of anthropogenic global warming, and the placing of immediate profits over and above the provision of reliable and affordable supplies. The national road network is largely neglected into a state of gross disrepair; broken road surfaces and pot-holes have become common on motorways and country lanes. Maintenance of flood defences has been deliberately neglected, with very severe consequences in some parts of the country. Rivers have not been dredged for many years with the inevitable results – even in the home counties the chickens have come home. Lack of maintenance to public water supplies and sewers present a constant threat to health and property.

Regarding water supplies and the sewage system; my own property was severely threatened three times last year from sewage over-flow because of a lack of public sewer maintenance and expansion. It was only because of my own action in lifting a manhole cover, that prevented raw sewage back-flowing from the main sewer under the public road into my ground-floor toilet. And when the 'maintenance team' arrived from the water company I was told: “There is no need to worry, if the main sewer back-floods into your home then our insurance will cover the cost of your repairs”. Thanks, but no-thanks. I would prefer the public sewers were properly maintained in such a manner that prevents the risk of raw sewage from entering my home in the first place. Only this week, we have had a fleet of sewage tanker trucks parked in the street on standby to pump out the sewers again. It would appear that the now private water company would prefer to claim on its insurance policy in the case of sewage over-flow in preference to spending money on making the sewers capable of handling the needs of the local residents.

The local authority is also partly to blame for all this threat from the sewers because they continue granting planning permission to build new homes, but without first insisting that the sewer capacity is increased BEFORE new development takes place.

A similar situation exists with electricity supplies and school places; more homes are built but it seems that nobody in the political sphere understands that essential services and utilities are not made of elastic. But all the CEOs and council executives continue to rake in huge salaries and bonuses.

Do you get the impression we're gradually sinking into a third-world country? Perhaps I should have used past tense, "we have sunk" already? And none of our politicians seem capable or concerned about doing anything about it. Everything seems to take forever.

Rich Kid, The level of widespread incompetence exhibited throughout the political class suggests to me that it is all a deliberate exercise in the destruction of our homeland. Even complete idiots would stand a chance of accidentally getting something right occasionally. But we see a universal dogged persistence in political incompetence across the whole spectrum of Lib/Lab/Con/Green 'parties', as if they are all working to a common purpose.
