One of the TV Holmes' once remarked, "Always carry a firearm east of Aldgate, Watson".

Petticoat Lane hasn't changed that much (yet) except for the colour of the faces. Plenty of dirt poor areas nearby still. Amazing on how many of the male population wore hats back then.

I was struck by how little these parts of London had changed. All very recognisable - especially considering the Blitz but I suppose a lot of that is because they are important London landmarks and close to the river.

Also strangely moving to think that almost no-one in that film is likely still alive - perhaps the young "Wendy" only. We walk in the footsteps of thousands, if not millions, of people - just like us - who are now largely forgotten ghosts. Once their lives were as important to them as ours are to us and in another 86 years between when this film was made and today we will all be gone, worm food and a distant memory of our children and their children.

Could not help notice how clean the roads and pavements were. Not one bit of litter showing in the whole film and there was a copper in practically every shot and on foot on the beat.

Check out the chap on the motorbike as it pulls away from where the traffic policemen had held the traffic. Looks like he is using a mobile phone.. 8-)

And finally this clip is so old I don't even think Jim is in it anywhere...... :D

No CCTV spying on the people, no red or yellow painted lines and markings on the roads, no bus lanes, no neon signs, no blanket covering of prohibiting signs. The police don't look threatening, weren't wearing battle dress, or carrying guns, shields, or wearing visored helmets. No helicopters buzzing overhead, or a continuous roar of noisy low-flying aircraft. The place had the general appearance of industrious tranquillity.

And a real sense of curiosity as the camera which must have been mounted on a cart moved slowly up Petticoat Lane. You could see it in the faces as they turned to look and the quality is exceptionally good for film this old. Clearly not many had seen a movie camera before.

This film actually conveyed the feeling of the age....

No national health in those days Jim. If you wanted glasses you had to pay for them.
