http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/9996129/Britain-may-need-to-dig-for-survival-minister-says.html Quote: David Heath, the agriculture minister, revived the memory of the Second World War government campaign that urged the public to “dig for victory”, as raised the prospect of “digging for survival” in future. Britain wrongly assumed that it would be possible to import all the food the country needed from abroad, he said, as experts warned that food prices would rise dramatically if the supermarket supply suffered. “With an increasing population, increasing demand not just in this country but across the world, we are going to have to increase food production,” Mr Heath said. “We made a huge mistake a few years ago when the idea got around that we didn’t need to produce in the agricultural sector any more, that we would be able to buy our way through whatever was necessary to feed the country.” The minister added: “Once we used to ‘dig for victory’. There may come a time soon when we need to ‘dig for survival’.” I was explaining to some twentysomethings how much our food supply has changed even in the past 30 years or so. Storage & refrigeration, removal of trade barriers, cheap freight, breeding of particular strains of animals and plants , and containerisation, has made it convenient to source food from anywhere on the globe. Food hardly seems to be seasonal any more. Until there is an oil or transport, or financial problem, that is. Shortages aren't necessarily a thing of the past. It's prudent to keep a modest stock of non-perishable essential items. You can always rotate it or use it later. |

A quote from that DT article: Quote: The minister said it was “a concern” that schools failed to encourage more pupils to consider careers in food and farming. I smell a convenient rat in this minister's statement; the horticulture industry is currently badgering the government to raise interest in horticulture as a career for school leavers because very few are entering the industry. The reason is, horticulture just doesn't appear in the school curriculum any more. Horticulture has suffered from the same problems as engineering. The image presented to young students for decades has been that these occupations are dirty, hard-work, unsatisfying, unrewarding, and don't fit the get-rich-quick celebrity culture that the young have been conditioned to expect. Plus the fact that successive governments for decades have done everything within their power to positively discourage, even destroy, horticulture and engineering. I also see in this article another government scare program. One that sits conveniently with the global warming/climate change, global population, and peek oil scares. Form a political point of view, a frightened population is a more malleable population. Another quote from the DT article: Quote: Britain imports 40 per cent of all food consumed and the proportion is rising. Britain has an electricity production crisis; a water storage crisis; an overloaded road transport system crisis; an overloaded NHS crisis; and an over-stretched education system crisis. All of which have been assisted by the deliberate political policy of open door immigration and EU membership. Britain also has a crisis of honesty and integrity from within the whole of the political sphere. The politicians, including David Heath, the agriculture minister, are the problem in all these crises; and not part of the cure. |
