I thought that about 12 years ago, somehow we both survived without each other.

Those words of Brian's are very true; I've seen that very situation outworked a number of times over the years. There is always somebody who can fill the hole that you think you've lef; and these days outsourcing agents and contractors thrive by filling holes that others thought were unfillable. When I retired I was asked to remain on standby should the need arise; the 'need' was outsourced to a specialist company within a very short time. Once your employer knows that you are looking to either retire or go on short-time working, then he/she will make it their business to fill the hole by whatever means it takes – even if it means paying an outside agent far more than they were paying you.

I'll find out when they ask me to continue part time or just show me the door
