I've been told that Tesco Yeading are increasing their Sunday opening hours from 08:00 to 21:00, albeit on a temporary basis.

What's the bet that if it's successful they will apply to make it permanent

Are you sure?

Stores over a certain size are subject to the Sunday trading laws and can only open for 8 hours. Typically 10-4 or 11-5.

Unless they have a temporary exemption? I think some of the rules are relaxed for 4 weeks whilst the Olympics are on!!

Checked this morning, the sign says from Sunday 22nd for the 'Summer'.

They must have got some form of planning permission to do that ?

Spotted this on the Tesco website:

Quote:
Between 22nd July until 9th September, we are extending the Sunday trading hours of our stores nationwide.

There must be some special dispensation during the 'limpics'

I am sure I read recently about a relaxation/extension to trading hours so retailers would not loose out on people staying at home watching the sports day on the TV. Such an extension would also help west end (and Stratford retailers) retailers pick up some tourists as they left their venue and were in need of urgent retail therapy.

Perhaps Tesco are using this 'temporary' licensing change

wish they would bring back the ban on large retailers open on sunday
be nice to be able to drive and visit people without all the traffic
and give folks living near a shopping centre a rest , and famillies time to be together.
Supermarkets say they make no more money opening sunday , that when they did not , and just followed what others did , and i would help small shops
After all supermarkets are open till late anyway

Its to do with the olympics so they say. Mind you in 2 weeks they are going to introduce charging a quid for a trolly which should stop them being dumped all over Yeading. Saying that the store must be a loss leader at the moment as it is hardly ever busy and you do not see people with bulging trollys anymore. This store should be closed down as they have no regard for local residents or even their own staff. I have hated that store for years and feel really sorry for the decent staff that work there as they are treated so bad by the young stupid managers

How true, this store has suffered from a series of useless managers for years. A few weeks ago I had some time off and went over there quite early in the morning and I was almost on my own. That quid a trolley has been years overdue.

Mind you im gonna wait for the lazy people that dont want their £1 and hope to make lots of money. I was in their earlier and totally empty, Also noticed recently a lot of the shelves are empty no matter what time you go. Perhaps I should try Aldi's for a change.
