I'd never heard of it till today. Anyone snapping up any amazing deals, discounts or bargains?

I thought it was just an American thing Jon ? I have certainly never heard of it over here.

Its an American tradition that marks the end of thanksgiving and the beginning of the Xmas shopping season. The shops are rammed and stores offers discounts to entice shoppers.

So greedy UK shops now want some of this action, so it wont be long until, like Halloween, we will forced to endure this nonsense.

Thanksgiving is always the last Thursday in November, most people get the day off work and the tradition is for familys to gather round the table and eat Turkey with trimmings and to give thanks to the founding fathers , Black Friday follows the next day and another day off, that makes for a long weekend and a chance to do Xmas shopping. Our local 'K Mart' is offering name brand 42 inch flatscreen TV's for $299.00 half the normal price, it is tough to have to endure but we get by.
